The Bromfield girls indoor track team won their second straight Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association indoor division four meet Sunday, February 18, at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Winning races from sophomore Emily Jones in the mile and junior Liz Lee in the two-mile led the Trojans to victory. The girls amassed 54 total points, 20 points ahead of second-place Weston High School and 22 points ahead of third-place North Reading High School.
Sophomore Katherine Finnegan earned Bromfield’s first eight points in the 300-meter race with a second-place time of 42 seconds. The 600-meter run followed, with junior Bo Dunn finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:39. Sophomore Maddie Darden, with a time of 1:42, came in sixth. Their times added five more points to the Bromfield side of the scoreboard.
In a close competition, the Trojans nearly placed in points position in the 1,000-meter. Senior Eliza Ives finished in the fourth spot with a time of 3:5, and sophomore Emily Egan came in seventh. Her time of 3:14 fell short of earning points by two seconds.
In the one-mile run, Jones earned her first-place finish with a time of 5:5, earning 10 points toward the team total. Junior Kat Long finished in sixth place in this event. Her time of 5:31 gained another point for the Trojans. Bromfield also finished in first and sixth place in the two-mile run. Lee ran a time of 11:25 for first place, and sophomore Jennie Ives had a time of 12:2.
The three relay teams earned 15 more points for Bromfield. The 4 x 200-meter team placed fourth with a time of 1:52. This team consisted of sophomores Lexie Daniells and Finnegan and eighth-graders Kim West and Mimi Narbonne. The 4 x 800-meter team—Long, sophomore Lisa Reedich, Eliza Ives, and Jones—came in first. Their time of 9:55 was 13 seconds better than the second-place team. The 4 x 400-meter team came in sixth with a time of 4:16. Darden, Narbonne, Reedich, and Dunn made up this team.
Senior Eliza Ives said the most exciting part of the meet was “checking in with [Coach] Henry [Phelan] throughout the meet to see how our points were stacking up against other teams.” She added that winning such an important meet “just feels gratifying.”
