Summer reading programs
The library’s summer reading programs are under way. Along with the children’s summer reading program for kids in preschool through sixth grade, the library is launching a new Teen Summer Reading Program. Students entering grades 7 to 12 who participate in the program will have an opportunity to win prizes by writing reviews of books they read. Fireworks at Fruitlands
Harvard’s Fourth of July fireworks will be held at Fruitlands Museum, Friday, July 3, at dusk. The museum will open at 11 a.m. for admission to the galleries, grounds, and restaurant. Recommended admission for fireworks is a $5 donation or a bag of groceries for Loaves & Fishes. Hayrides will operate from 5 p.m. until dusk at $2 per person per ride. Tie-dye Bonanza
The library will sponsor a Tie-dye Bonanza for all ages Wednesday, July 8, from 3 to 4 p.m. outside the library. The rain date will be Thursday, July 9. Participants should bring their own t-shirts. (7/03)
Sundown Concert at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum will host “Screen and Stage Spectaculars,” a Sundown Concert by the Concord Band, Wednesday, July 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the museum. The performance will feature favorite movie themes and Broadway melodies. Gates will open at 5 p.m. Admission is $12 per car for museum members, $15 per car for nonmembers. Morning Bird Walk
Fruitlands Museum will host a morning bird walk Saturday, July 11, at 6:30 a.m., starting at the museum parking lot. Local birder Pat White will lead the 2-mile walk through Fruitlands’ meadows and woods, including some steep sections and wet areas. Nashua Riverfront Walking Tour
The Nashua River Watershed Association will sponsor a free guided “River’s Edge” walking tour Sunday, July 12, from 3 to 5 p.m., beginning and ending at the Water Street parking lot, south side of the Nashua River just west of Main Street, Nashua, N.H. Kathy Hersh, Nashua Community Development Director, will describe many connections between the city and the river along the 1.6-mile loop. Well-Adult Clinic
The Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, in conjunction with the Ayer Board of Health, will hold a free Well-Adult Clinic Wednesday, July 15, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Senior Center, 18 Pond St. in Ayer. Evening Walk at Bolton Flats
The Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) invites the public to a free guided evening walk at Bolton Flats Thursday, July 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The guide will be Chris Buelow, restoration ecologist assistant with the Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program. On this half-mile walk, Buelow will talk about the unique habitat at Bolton Flats, identify local flora and fauna, and discuss habitat restoration projects, such as the program to eradicate invasive purple loosestrife using beneficial Galerucella beetles.
Pre-registration is requested for this free guided walk. The walk will take place rain or shine. Walkers should wear sturdy footwear and dress for protection from mosquitoes and ticks. Sorry, no dogs are allowed. Walker should meet at the Bolton Flats Wildlife Area parking lot on Route 117, just west of the intersection of routes 117 and 110 in Bolton.
