The Harvard Public Library will be closed Saturday, Sept. 3 and Monday, Sept. 5 for the Labor Day holiday. The library will be open for its regular hours Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Summer Reading Wrap-up
Readers who logged more than 30 hours in the Harvard Public Library’s Summer Reading Program have until Tuesday, Sept. 6, to choose which books will receive their bookplates.
Pasta Party and Sports Rally for Bromfield Athletes
All Bromfield students are invited to start off the fall athletic season with a pasta party Thursday, Sept. 8, 6:30 p.m. in the Bromfield cafeteria. Student athletes from all seasons are welcome to the student event, but seats are limited. Dinner by Chef Paul will feature stuffed shells with or without meat and Caesar salad, followed by homemade apple crisp. Tickets in advance are $10 and may be purchased at Bromfield during the week at lunch or after school. Tickets at the door are $15. The fundraising event is sponsored by the Bromfield Alpine Ski Team.
Solarize Mass/Harvard Information Opportunity
Harvard’s Solarize Mass volunteers, together with Harvard’s solar integrator, New England Breeze, will be on-hand Saturday, Sept. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Harvard soccer fields on Depot Road. The morning is an opportunity to meet neighbors who are going solar, get questions answered, and enter to win an additional $500 Solarize Mass rebate. Bring your utility bill to get an instant solar assessment. Solarize Mass is a pilot project of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to offer reduced-cost solar electric systems to residents and small businesses. Ken Harrod Memorial Bike Ride
The Harvard Firefighters Association will host the second annual Ken Harrod Memorial Bike Ride Sunday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in memory of longtime department member Ken Harrod, who died last year. The benefit will offer five different courses: 48 miles, 32 miles, 16 miles, 8 miles, and a 2-mile Fun Ride for kids. Run for the Hills 5K
The Harvard Conservation Trust, with the Harvard Road Race Association, will host the second annual Run for the Hills 5K Run/Walk Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. through some of Harvard’s picturesque conservation land. The race will begin at the track in Harvard Park and will follow trails through the park and adjacent fields. Documentary “Into Eternity”
Harvard Local will show “Into Eternity,” the first feature documentary to explore the perplexing scientific and philosophical questions posed by long-term nuclear waste storage, Monday, Sept. 12, at 7:15 p.m. in Volunteers Hall at the Harvard Public Library. The Guardian called the film “a quietly philosophical meditation on time and infinity.”
Girl Scout Registration
Harvard Girl Scouts will hold a registration night for all new Scouts Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Congregational Church. Registration is open to any girl who lives or attends school in Harvard and is between the ages of 5 and 18 years. The registration fee is $12; payment by check is preferred. Returning Scouts should contact their troop leaders for registration information. Girl Scouts is a volunteer-run organization that needs leaders and assistant leaders at all levels. No experience is necessary, training is given, the pay is terrible, but the benefits of working with a daughter and her peers is priceless. The Harvard Republican Town Committee will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hildreth House. Future meetings will be held the second Wednesday of every month at the Hildreth House.
Charity Golf Tournament
Six area Rotary Clubs will sponsor a charity golf tournament Thursday, Sept. 15, at Red Tail Golf Club at Devens. The nine-hole tournament fee is $85 per person, which includes greens fees, golf cart, practice range, prizes, and a barbeque dinner. Local businesses also have the opportunity to sponsor the event at a gold-, silver- or bronze-level for a contribution between $100 and $500. Lions Club Annual Fall Festival
The Lions Club Annual Fall Festival Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 16, 17, and 18, will open Friday night with its popular Battle of the Bands competition. The festival’s Saturday night concert will feature the Beatles tribute band, Beatle Juice, followed by fireworks. The festival will also have live music, the State Barbecue Cook-off with a chance to sample the competition, live demonstrations, craft vendors, kids events, barbecue and other food throughout the weekend, adult/teen challenges, and Cow Plop Bingo. Classic cars will be on view Sunday. The gates will open at 5 p.m. Friday evening, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and at 5:30 p.m. Saturday night for the 6 p.m. concert and 8 p.m. fireworks. Admission Friday night is $7 for all ages, and $5 for Saturday and Sunday daytimes,. The Saturday night concert and fireworks are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
Circle of Songs at the Library
Hugh Hanley will bring his Circle of Songs for all ages to the Harvard Public Library, Saturday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. Hanley has been singing with young children for over twenty years in his work as an early childhood educator, music specialist and entertainer. He draws from a wide and varied repertoire of songs, finger plays, and music activities that are appropriate, accessible, and engaging. Please preregister.
Girls Night Out Fundraiser
On Sept. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden, 145 Bolton Road, Harvard, will hold a comprehensive workshop on progressive strength training. This program is appropriate for women aged 35 and up. The eight-acre Healing Garden opens its doors to women in the Harvard community and surrounding towns. Pre-registration is required. Linking Landscapes for Massachusetts Wildlife
The Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA) will host a free presentation, Linking Landscapes for Massachusetts Wildlife, Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the NRWA River Resource Center, 592 Main St., in Groton. The Linking Landscape Program’s mission is to minimize the impact of the existing road network on rare and non-game wildlife. The program encourages citizens’ engagement by documenting public reports of road kill, turtle crossing “hotspots,” and migration routes of amphibians across roadways in an online database. Bolton Local presents ‘Unseen Chemicals and Your Health’
Bolton Local will continue its film/lecture series at the Bolton Public Library Thursday, Sept. 15, with a presentation on the chemicals you may not even be aware of in our environment—including those in fragrances and cosmetics—that can affect your health and the health of those around you. The presenter will be Rosemary Coley of the Boston Self Help Center, who has lived with multiple chemical sensitivity for 10 years. Coley was instrumental in the design and implementation of nontoxic, fragrance-free policies at the Women’s Center for Wellness in Milford, Mass. The presentation will include a video, a talk by Coley, and discussion afterward. (Please plan to come to the event fragrance-free.) Refreshments will be available at 6:30 p.m.; the discussion will start at 7 p.m.
