With a persistent defense and disciplined offense, the Lady Trojans were victorious over the Maynard Tigers in the Bromfield gym on Thursday, Feb. 16, 50-38.
In the first quarter, junior starting guard Casey Magrath scored six points, starters Montana Burke and Amy Jorgensen each had four, and sophomore Sue Ross scored two points. Magrath had three steals and three rebounds. Bromfield scored 16 points in the first quarter compared to Maynard’s six.
Senior Katie Drummey attained four rebounds and two points in the second quarter. Burke made a two-point left hook shot while senior co-captain Katja Lierhaus scored two jump shots. Defensive power house Ross had five rebounds and two steals in the first two quarters.
It was either team’s game at half time, with Bromfield ahead by only three points, 24-21.
Bromfield scored 20 points in the third quarter, while Maynard scored 10. Ross led her team offensively by scoring eight of the points. Burke scored five, Lierhaus had four, and Magrath finished with three points.
As a team, Bromfield played a very effective 2-1-2 zone defense, as well as achieving four steals and six rebounds. Burke had back-to-back breakaways; the first was after she made a defensive steal and the second started with a strong overhead pass from teammate Magrath.
“Overall it was a great game because our intensity level was high from the very beginning and continued throughout the game’s entirety,” said junior Dareen Kanaan, who continues to support her team from the sidelines as she recovers from a concussion. “There were a few shots that we should have gotten, but otherwise our team played really well.”
Bromfield fought hard to protect the lead in the fourth quarter. The Trojans made 12 rebounds. Burke made a perfect three-point shot. Drummey scored a jump shot off an assist from Burke, and Ross landed one free throw.
“Coming into it, we knew it was a big game for us to win, and we played good defense and converted the intensity to offense,” Magrath said. “A lot of people contributed, which is good to see, especially as we are about to enter the playoffs.”

Called up from Bromfield’s junior varsity team, eighth grader Amanda Accorsi played in her first-ever varsity game. Accorsi had two defensive rebounds and played very tight man-to-man defense, preventing her opponent from receiving a pass.
“I was a little worried and anxious heading into the game, but once I got on the court I was completely fine and not nervous at all,” said Accorsi of her varsity debut. “The team communicated really well I thought, and we were aggressive on defense.”
After Bromfield’s victory over Maynard, the Bromfield girls basketball team holds a record of 15 wins and four losses.
“It definitely wasn’t our strongest game, but our second half we started looking more like we usually do because we were running the floor, penetrating the key, and passing the ball well,” Lierhaus said. “We did, however, come out with a win, and we can only look forward to the post season.”
