Observing Nighthawks
Friends of the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge are participating in the national nighthawk migration survey. A member will be available every evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., weather permitting, through Saturday, Sept. 8, to help volunteer counters identify the birds in flight and learn about them. Volunteers will help collect data from an observation post along the Oxbow Refuge fields on Still River Depot Road. To find out if the survey will take place on a particular night, call Don Macfarlane at 978-897-7567. Volunteers should bring a chair, binoculars, and a camera. Cub Scout Registration
The Harvard Cub Scouts will be holding a registration/information night for new and returning Cub Scouts and their parents on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. in Volunteers Hall at the Harvard Public Library. Early Release Movies at the Library
The Harvard Public Library’s Early Release Movie Series for Bromfield students will begin with movies Thursday, Sept. 6, and Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m. Movies are rated PG-13.
Monarch Butterfly Tagging
Friends of the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge will sponsor a Monarch Butterfly Tagging, a family event, Saturday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. at the Oxbow fields toward the end of Still River Depot Road. The tagging is part of the yearly nationwide Monarch Butterfly Survey and the program is for both adults and children. Participants will learn how to catch a monarch butterfly, to put a tag onto one of its wings, and where to look for their caterpillars and other insects. The event will be canceled in case of rain. Basket Weekend at Fruitlands
Fruitlands Museum will highlight the extensive collection of baskets in its Native American, Shaker, and Farmhouse museums Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 8 and 9, with tours, informative lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on activities throughout the weekend. Free with admission.
Scavenger Hunt
The Friends of the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m., will give participants a chance to see how many listed items they can locate and use their cameras to prove it. Small prizes will be awarded for the highest scores. The hunt will start at the main parking lot at the end of Still River Depot Road and should last about two hours. It will be canceled in case of rain or extreme heat. Participants should wear long, light-colored pants and good walking shoes and bring a camera, water, and insect repellent. Amongst the Birches Exhibit
John Curuby, president of the Boston Art Club, will offer an information session in conjunction with Fruitlands Museums’ Marie Spaeth: Amongst the Birches exhibit Sunday, Sept. 9, at 1 p.m. The information session is free with admission.
Marrow Registry
Adults between the ages of 18 and 60 are invited to participate in the Marrow Registry Sunday, Sept. 9, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at Holy Trinity Parish. Dana Farber Cancer Institute professionals will be on hand, as well as Camp Sunshine volunteers who will be helping to organize the drive. Run for the Hills
The Harvard Conservation Trust’s annual Run for the Hills road race will take place Sunday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m. at the McCurdy Track, 34 Lancaster County Road. Senior Citizens’ Chicken Barbecue
The Ayer Rotary Club will hold its annual Senior Citizens’ Chicken Barbecue Saturday, Sept. 15, at 11:30 a.m. at the Devens Community Center next to Rogers Field. The event is free to seniors in Ayer, Devens, Harvard, and Shirley. The Nashoba Valley Concert Band will provide music. No reservations are needed. Lions Club Fall Festival
The Lions Club annual Fall Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, at 150 Ayer Road. The weekend lineup will include the Saturday Night Concert with stage show and dance party band Booty Vortex from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Fireworks will be held at 8:30 p.m., a new time to accommodate families with young children. A bonfire will follow the fireworks. Other events and features include the Mass Sate Championship Barbecue, crafters, a classic car show, activities for toddlers and kids, teen challenges, live music all day, and a variety of food offerings.
Daytime admission Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is $5 per person for all ages. The Saturday night concert and fireworks admission from 5 to 10:30 p.m. is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Harvard Shaker Village Tour
The Harvard Historical Society will sponsor an unprecedented opportunity to tour eight private homes in Harvard Shaker Village and the village conservation areas Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Historical Society will also exhibit selections from its Shaker collection at 215 Still River Road. Fruitlands will help out by selling tickets and allowing tour-goers free admission to Fruitlands on September 15 or 16 to visit the original Shaker Office, which is now a museum on site. Bird Banding Demonstration
The Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge will hold a Bird Banding Demonstration Sunday, Sept. 16, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at a banding station on Depot Road in Still River. Adults and children with parents are welcome, with or without experience, anytime during the banding to help catch birds, take them out of the nets, collect data, band them, and let them go. To help set up the nets, participants should arrive before 8 a.m. Call Dr. Brown at 978-582-4734 and leave a message how many people are coming and when. The rain date will be Sept. 23.
Old Frog Pond Farm’s Sculpture Walk
Old Frog Pond Farm’s Sculpture Walk, Around the Pond and Through the Woods, will return with the work of 16 New England sculptors with an opening Sunday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 5 p.m. This year’s invitational exhibit will include four Harvard sculptors: Alicia Dwyer, Geoffrey Koetsch, Greta Minervini, and Linda Hoffman. Local bluegrass band Still River will play traditional bluegrass, as well as rock and roll and folk throughout the afternoon. Lila Terry, grower of Lightroot, an Asian wild yam, will be on hand to give tours of the on-site Lightroot boxes and discuss the medicinal and energetic properties of the new addition to the farm.
The sculpture walk is hosted by Old Frog Pond Farm’s farmers, Linda Hoffman and Blase Provitola. The sculpture walk can be toured weekends from 1 to 5 p.m. through Columbus Day. More information is available on the farm’s Facebook page and at www.oldfrogpondfarm.com.

Artist Panel Discussion
Fruitlands Museum will host an artist panel discussion, The Transcendentalist Landscape, Sunday, Sept. 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. Artists will share images of their work and discuss the relationship between landscapes and their visual vocabulary. Panelists with varied creative and professional backgrounds will discuss unique approaches to documenting, interpreting, and transforming a landscape as a creative exercise. Free with admission.

Traditional Russian Teas
The Museum of Russian Icons will sponsor a traditional Russian Tea Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the museum in Clinton. Presenter Larissa Dyan will explain the traditions and customs of tea and its service in Russia.
