Selectmen set date for Special Town Meeting, return ATM to Saturday morning

September 26, 2014

The selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday night, Sept. 23, to call a Special Town Meeting in October and to return Annual Town Meeting to a Saturday morning start next spring.

The fall meeting will be held on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Cronin Auditorium of the Bromfield School. Town Administrator Tim Bragan told the selectmen that the meeting was necessary to deal with at least six bookkeeping items, including a new contract for DPW employees and a correction to the omnibus budget. The selectmen remain undecided whether they will put a question to the meeting regarding their plans for Town Hall.

As for Annual Town Meeting, the selectmen voted together to hold the 2015 Annual Town Meeting in the Bromfield gym on March 28. Selectman Ron Ricci initially held out for giving a weeknight meeting another shot, noting that attendance was high on the first night of the 2014 gathering. Selectwoman Lucy Wallace said that she missed the fair-like atmosphere of past Saturday meetings and that a daytime gathering was better for seniors who couldn’t drive at night.

Selectman Leo Blair, who at first claimed he was neutral on the matter, ultimately voted for the Saturday morning slot after getting Wallace to agree—“conditionally,” as she put it—to return to weeknights if attendance was down this spring.

The Town Election will be held Tuesday, April 7.
