Boys track and field places fifth at Leagues

May 28, 2015

At the Mid-Wach C League Championships Wednesday and Thursday last week in Lunenburg, the Bromfield boys’ outdoor track and field team took fifth place in a field of seven teams.

With several sprinters injured, the Trojans had no entries in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter, and the 4×100-meter relay, causing them to lose points. But their strong performances in the field and distance events garnered them enough points for the fifth-place team finish.

At championship-level meets such as the league meet, the top six places in each event score.

In the field events, two Trojans scored: Sophomore Jamie Barrett placed fifth in the pole vault, and junior Beck Peterson finished third in the discus.

Junior Nick Steele took first in the 2-mile. For the first couple of laps, Steele ran with the pack. Then he broke away from the other runners. The gap widened as the race progressed, leaving Steele with a solid first-place finish. Sophomore Will Day also ran the 2-mile, posting a strong sixth-place finish out of a field of eleven runners.

In the 1-mile, senior Price Day took first, and sophomore Paul Chapman outkicked several of his competitors to finish fourth. With 100 meters left in the race, Chapman, along with three other runners, sprinted down the straightaway. Chapman passed Narragansett’s Dylan Chartier and Lunenburg’s David Gardner, but Narragansett’s Joe Capps finished ahead of him by less than a second.

Steele and Price Day also placed in the 800-meter, taking first and second, respectively.

Both of Bromfield’s entries in the relays, the 4×400-meter and the 4×800-meter, placed fourth. The 4×400 relay was run by sophomores Tristan Cronin, Joseph Mitchell, Will Day, and Barrett, and the 4×800 was run by senior Matt Polimou, freshman Ryell deRuijter, junior Kyle Route, and Chapman.

The Trojans’ next meet is the Central/Western Division II Championship meet, which will take place Saturday, May 30, at Westfield State.
