Bromfield boys tennis silences Oakmont, bows to Tyngsborough

April 21, 2016

The Bromfield Trojans boys varsity tennis team overpowered Oakmont 4–1 on Wednesday, April 13. The Trojans went on to face Tyngsborough on Friday, April 15, ultimately losing their five matches with a score of 4–1.

On Wednesday against Oakmont, a lack of time forced junior Noah Dyer, the second singles and team captain, to play a pro-set match against his opponent, whose rules award the match to the first player to win eight games rather than the best of three sets. Dyer flattened his opponent with a finish of 8–1. Freshmen Charlie Bardenheuer and Jake Catalina, second doubles, also had a good day, overpowering their opponents 6–1, 6–2.

The team moved on to face Tyngsborough on Friday. First singles player freshman Raymond Li went up against a powerful opponent. Their match quickly intensified, with misshit balls soaring above the protective fencing twice. Li lost the first set after a close game, which included a deuce. The set finally ended with a miscalculated overhead hit by Li, a mistake he repeated several other times in the match. His defining play of the second set was an ace, a high-speed shot his opponent wasn’t able to touch. In the end he lost the match 6–2, 6–1.

Second singles Dyer lost his match 6–2, 6–2. He lost his first set with a series of close volleys at the net. Third singles, Catalina, had the longest and closest match of the day but finally fell to Tyngsborough by a score of 7–6, 6–7, 7–6.

Second doubles, Matt Canning and Nicholas Thornton, clinched the only victory for the Trojans on Friday. They finished 7–6, 6–3 after a lengthy battle with their opponents.

The varsity boys tennis team will face Groton-Dunstable on Tuesday, April 26.
