This week police made 17 traffic stops that resulted in eight citations, eight verbal warnings, and one summons. They also assisted a motorist with a disabled vehicle and helped another get into an inadvertently locked car. The ambulance crew responded to five medical emergencies and took five people to the hospital, three with Advanced Life Support on board.
Tuesday, Aug. 23
At 9:16 a.m. a 911 caller reported a wire down across Ayer Road. Charter Communications was notified. Someone called at 9:25 a.m. to report a low-hanging branch on Whitney Road. The Department of Public Works was dispatched to take care of it. A resident stopped at the station at 12:49 p.m. to turn in a 40-year-old shotgun found in the attic and asked that police have it destroyed. Someone stopped at the station at 3:27 p.m. to turn in a wallet found at the town beach. Police attempted unsuccessfully to contact the owner; the wallet is still at the station waiting to be claimed. A caller reported a door open at the McCurdy Track building. The responding officer discovered that the door had been kicked in during an apparent break-in attempt. Police are investigating.
Wednesday, Aug. 24
A motorist stopped at the station at 6:33 a.m. to report a road-rage incident that he said started on Pinnacle Road and continued on to Poor Farm Road. After a police investigation revealed that the motorist was an equal participant in the incident, he decided not to pursue the issue further. An officer stopped on West Bare Hill Road at 7:11 a.m. to investigate an 18-wheel truck parked in the road. The driver told the officer he had pulled over to sleep; the officer told him to move on. Someone stopped at the station at 1:37 p.m. to turn in a license plate found on Stow Road. Police were unable to contact the owner; the plate is still at the station. An officer stopped on Still River Road at 2:54 p.m. to tell the drivers of two Charter Communications trucks to move the vehicles off the roadway.
Thursday, Aug. 25
Someone who had been out for a walk on Ayer Road called at 8:59 a.m. to report a large pothole on the Route 2 overpass. Police notified the state Department of Transportation. Someone from the Department of Defense called at 1:08 p.m. to tell police that some personal belongings had been seen on the bridge near the Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge. A responding officer found a group of youths there and told them to move along. Someone stopped at the station at 2:42 p.m.to turn in a credit card found on Old Littleton Road. The unclaimed card is still at the station.
Friday, Aug. 26
A patrol officer stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts at 1:21 a.m. to investigate an occupied car in the parking lot. The driver told the officer he was dropping off a passenger. Someone called at 8:18 a.m. to report that a large turkey had been struck by a vehicle on Westcott Road. The animal control officer was dispatched and had to euthanize the bird. At 11:04 a.m. a caller reported a dog running around in traffic on Ayer Road. The animal control officer was notified but was unable to locate the dog.
Saturday, Aug. 27
An Oak Hill Road resident called at 9:40 a.m. to request extra police patrols in the area to deal with bicyclists who were often seen riding two or three abreast on the road. An Old Littleton Road resident called at 10:57 a.m. to complain that a trailer had been parked in a shared driveway for about two weeks. An officer located the owner of the trailer, who said he was doing work at a residence in the neighborhood.
Sunday, Aug. 28
A caller reported at 11:35 a.m. that a large wasp nest had fallen from a tree onto Old Littleton Road, posing a potential threat to bikers and walkers in the area. The DPW was called to take care of it. Police were called to the scene of a serious accident on Still River Road at 3:20 p.m. Police report that the driver of a car making a left turn from St. Benedict’s driveway did not see a motorcycle heading south on Still River Road and struck it. The motorcycle operator and passenger were both ejected from the bike and were taken to UMass Medical Center with serious injuries. The circumstances of the accident are under investigation. At 8:09 p.m. a family stopped at the station to speak with an officer about a problem they had while out walking. An Old Meadow Road resident called 911 at 8:29 p.m. to report hearing footsteps in the upstairs of the house, despite being home alone. The caller waited in a car outside while police checked the residence and the yard. Police report that all was in order and nothing suspicious was found.
Monday, Aug. 29
At 7:54 a.m. a caller reported that while he and a companion were out walking on East Bare Hill Road, a car had sped by, nearly causing an accident. The caller provided a description of the car and a license plate number, but police say the plate number was incorrect. An officer checked the area around East Bare Hill Road but did not locate the vehicle. Someone called at 8:06 a.m. to report a dog without a collar was loose on Pond Road near Warren Avenue. Animal control was notified. Fire personnel were dispatched to Littleton Road, near the center of town, to clean up hydraulic fluid that had leaked from an 18-wheel truck passing through the area. Police provided a traffic detail while firefighters worked on the cleanup with personnel from the state Department of Environmental Protection. Ayer police called at 6:32 p.m. seeking assistance in searching for a suspect wanted in connection with a domestic assault in Ayer.
