A bushy upstart on the Common

September 28, 2017

From our vantage point overlooking the Common, we have reported a surprising number of stories about the town Christmas tree. For many years the tree took center stage at its annual lighting and photo op. More recently, it got front-page treatment as controversy swirled about the color of its lights and the unfortunate pattern in which they were strung. And then squirrels started stealing the lights on a regular basis, dimming the tree’s central role in the town’s holiday décor.

Through it all, the old tree had a certain dignity, and more than a few residents mourned its passing last week. But we are delighted to welcome the new kid on the Common—a bushy upstart with great promise for the future. We look forward to watching it grow for many years to come.
