The Bromfield girls track and field team remained undefeated May 24, following a narrow victory (73-70) over Gardner High School. The boys team picked up its second win of the season by a landslide (95-49).
The girls performed well overall, picking up points in every event except the 4×100-meter relay. On the field, sophomore Molly Squire was a power player as usual, taking second in the shot put (24 feet, 8 inches) and the discus (78 feet, 6.4 inches). Senior Ally Donahue was third in the discus, throwing 69 feet, 1.5 inches.
Senior Dharma Cooper’s vault of 8 feet won her the pole vault, and senior Claire Stoddard brought in another 5 points for the Trojans with her triple jump of 32 feet, 3.5 inches. Stoddard was second in the long jump, with 16 feet, 0.5 inches.
Juniors Pariss Eang Lee and Patra Bonney were third in the high jump (4 feet, 4 inches) and the javelin throw (70 feet, 8.5 inches), respectively.
Eang Lee had a successful day on the track as well. She won the 200-meter dash in 28.9 seconds, followed by Cooper in 30.5, and took second in the 100-meter dash (13.5). Freshman Sophia Purcell won the 100-meter hurdles in 21.2.
Hannah Beckman and Marley Ferguson, both seniors, took the top two spots in the 400-meter dash in 63.4 and 69.7. Stoddard won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:14.3.
In the distance and mid-distance events, Bromfield’s underclassmen stepped up. Eighth-graders Emma Squire (2:45.7) and Isabel Jackson (2:49.9) were first and second in the 800-meter. Molly Squire, a sophomore, won the mile in 5:55.4, and seventh-grader Cate Corbett won the 2-mile in 12:57.8, with senior Helena Justicz in third (15.47.7).
Coming into the last event of the evening, a win was within reach for either team. With the score at 70-68, the 4×400-meter relay was the determining factor. Returning from individual events earlier in the day, the Squire sisters, Ferguson, and Beckman all had enough left in the tank to split 4:38.5, winning the event and snatching up the last 5 points to secure the team’s third victory of the season.
The boys had a more relaxed meet. Seniors Jordan Colon and Cole O’Neil and freshman Colin Harte swept the 100 in 11.2, 11.4, and 11.5. Harte (18 feet, 8 inches), senior Angelos Psathas (17 feet, 10.5 inches), and senior Jack Stahl (17 feet, 3.5 inches) did the same in the long jump.
Also on the field, seniors Nathan Woolcock and Jack Yu took first and third in the shot put, throwing 39 feet and 31 feet, 6 inches, respectively. Woolcock was also first in the javelin (128 feet, 6.5 inches), followed by senior Freddie Curtis (110 feet, 2 inches). Sophomore Liam Morrison won the discus with 86 feet, 9 inches and sophomore Curtis DiNapoli was third (67 feet, 1 inch).
Senior Gavin Maddalone vaulted 7 feet, 6 inches for second place in the pole vault and Yu cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump. Stahl (33 feet, 10 inches) and Harte (28 feet, 0.5 inches) were first and second in the triple jump.
Morrison and Psathas showed up on the track too, taking first and second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.8 seconds and 20 seconds. Psathas was first in the 400-meter hurdles in 1 minute, 5.2 seconds. The 200 was won by Colon in 22.8 seconds and O’Neil was second in 23.1.
Once again, underclassmen dominated the distance and mid-distance events. Sophomore Sam Secor took second in the 800 in 2:17.5 and seventh-grader Harrison Binnick followed in 2:30.1 for third. In the mile Stahl, a freshman, was first in 5:05.0 and in the 2-mile freshman Diesel Whitten was third in 13:27.6.
The boys lost the 4×100, but won the 4×400 in 4:05. The team’s win is the second of the season, following a win against Tyngsborough High School and a loss to Clinton High School.
The Trojans were scheduled to host Lunenburg High School at Harvard Park May 27.
