Farmers’ Market in town Saturday

August 31, 2007

This Saturday, Harvard will host its first weekly Farmers’ Market, where shoppers can select fresh produce and meet the local farmers who grew it. On behalf of the Harvard Farmers’ Market, we would like to thank all who have come together to realize this exciting venture. With tremendous support from area farmers and the tireless work of the Harvard Farmers’ Market team, we will feature more than 10 market stands. Live music provided by Wild Edibles will make for a fun, festive environment at the elementary school location, made available to us by Superintendent Tom Jefferson. Generous support from our community sponsors, Dr. Terry Anelons of Harvard Chiropractic and Nashoba Valley Medical Center, enables us to spread the word to shoppers in town and in neighboring communities, and enthusiastic encouragement from many, including HarvardLocal.org, was vital to our launch.

A heartfelt thanks goes to the Pappas family, Chris and Audrey Tracey, and Vinny Alfano for their generous contributions to our Fourth of July float. Special thanks, too, to the Siddiqui family and the Harvard Police Department for their help and cooperation.

According to the USDA, farmers’ markets have grown nearly 20 percent in the past three years; last week, Governor Deval Patrick proclaimed August 19–25 as Farmers’ Market Week, noting that the markets “help heighten public awareness of the agricultural diversity of Massachusetts and the benefits of buying local and preserving open space.” Our area towns have a vital agricultural core that is well worth supporting—and delicious! Please join us this Saturday and every Saturday morning, 9 a.m. to noon, at the elementary school (please park behind the school or at Bromfield).
