The proponents’ case for a vote of no confidence in the School Committee is well known. Petitioners have followed rumors that resulted in charges now in the hands of the state Ethics Commission and the office of the District Attorney. That the School Committee voted unanimously to extend the superintendent’s contract demonstrates their belief that he is important for the schools’ continued success as one of the best in the state. They must not automatically be denigrated. They are all serious, respected, independent citizens.
No matter what your views, fairness and the possibility of error dictate that we await official rulings. The proponents of the citizens’ petition can withdraw their motion at Town Meeting. It can be reintroduced, if necessary, at a later date.
Let us treat each other with respect. The proponents are rightfully upset with a former School Committee member’s personal gain at town expense. The School Committee acted unanimously to support the superintendent. If there was an error and the School Committee forgave the error, that may in fact strengthen administration. The School Committee must be commended for making hard choices for our schools.
Now is an opportunity to draw back—wait for official rulings, consider solutions other than demonizing each other. If this censure goes forward as proposed, Harvard will change. We will institutionalize a strain of nastiness and hypocrisy in town life.
