Words attributed to Stu Sklar in Alice Rennie’s lengthy October 5 article were an imprecise representation of his actual statement. The article’s reference (“‘Hindsight is always 20/20. In hindsight, I wish I hadn’t given him a good evaluation and extended his contract in June,’ Sklar said.’”) implies that he regrets his decision to give Jefferson a positive review and related contract extension.
In fact, his exact quote was a single thought expressed as, “Hindsight is always 20/20. And I voted to extend his contract and I gave him a favorable review on June 25. I wish I hadn’t done that. In hindsight…I would have said, ‘Tom, I like the job you’re doing. I would like to put this off for a couple of months.’”
In truncating Sklar’s actual words, the Press strayed from reporting and into editorializing, doing a disservice to readers.
