Thanks to Mary Turner and John Grady for their comments on bicycle safety and the rights and responsibilities of drivers and bikers and town officials. Just a reminder: this issue was prompted by an accident in which a young boy and his family’s lives were turned upside down and the life of another youngster, the driver and her family’s lives, will not ever be the same. The losses continue to mount and the anguish is relived daily. It behooves us as a community to gather these families into our arms and support them to the degree we each can and to avoid moralizing, analyzing, and focusing on the traffic rules and where to place the blame. These families’ lives are what we ought to try to heal and maybe by being more conscious of the repercussions of what has happened we’ll even slow down a bit as we race about our lives..
