The five-alarm fire that destroyed several buildings in the lumberyard of the G.V. Moore Lumber Co. in Ayer Tuesday, Nov. 27 was allegedly started by two juveniles, ages 12 and 15, who have been charged in the case. According to the Ayer Police Department, the youths ignited the fire by dropping burning objects through a vent hole in one of the storage buildings. The two will be arraigned in Lowell Juvenile Court at a later date on charges of burning a building.
The five-alarm fire, which interrupted rail service on the Fitchburg commuter line, drew support from eight surrounding towns, including Harvard. Most members of Harvard’s 25-member squad responded, to man engines 2 and 4 at the scene of the fire and to cover the station back in Harvard.
