The lights are on, but nobody’s home

February 8, 2008

While I was out plowing driveways at night during one of our last snowstorms, trying to pay for our next tax increase that our school administration tells us is “essential for the children,” I came upon a fully illuminated new library, completely empty, driveway plowed.

This made me think back to my time on the Board of Selectmen, listening to the sponsors of the new library talk about how frugally they planned on operating the new “palace.” Pity the poor taxpayer who might question how this would be achieved. They would be looked down upon from the noses of the library posse, to think that anyone would question their efforts. They fooled enough people and the place was built.

What did we get? A no-solar, no-geothermal, no-wind-powered building that runs on fossils fuels. In my opinion the old library was just fine. I must ask, does anyone over there know how to turn off a light? Where are all the “green” committees and reduce-energy committees in town that I’m always reading about?

Must we rely on our three remaining selectmen to look into this—selectmen whom I don’t think anyone can label “fiscal watchdogs?”

Maybe it’s just that all those books get frightened in the dark.
