Last week Verizon announced plans to upgrade its Internet services to several communities across the state, including Harvard, with a capital investment of $200 million in new broadband technology this year.
In a press release the company said it plans to continue the expansion of its FiOS technology in Eastern Mass. as it completes franchise agreements in 30 new towns in the region. FiOS isn’t slated for Harvard yet, but it’s getting closer, with agreements in not-too-distant Hudson and Stow. The company will introduce high speed Internet services to 23 towns in Western Mass. and here in Central Mass. will offer its new 7 Mbps high speed Internet service to 24 towns in Central and Western Mass., including Harvard and Bolton. The new service will offer DSL customers in this area a third choice in connection speed, the other two being 1.5 Mbps and 3 Mbps.
The company said that the project to expand its Internet services in the state “complements Gov. Deval Patrick’s initiative to bring more broadband to unserved and underserved communities in Massachusetts.”
Phil Santoro, a spokesperson for the company, said that no schedule has been established yet for town-by-town implementation of the new services.
