‘Green’ housing at Devens
“We hope to build among the greenest new housing in the commonwealth,” Peter Lowitt, land use director for MassDevelopment, told the JBOS members. He is in the process of assembling a Green Housing Advisory Committee and will be issuing an open invitation for letters of interest from citizens of Devens and the towns of Harvard, Ayer, and Shirley, from which it was formed.
“We’re greening our operations,” Lowitt said.
Devens infrastructure
Reporting to the JBOS on Devens infrastructure, Victor Normand of MassDevelopment distributed a schedule of all of the roads in Devens listed by town, in meters, feet, and miles. Of the total 19.66 miles of road, 16.024 miles or 82 percent are in geographic Harvard. In terms of utilities, Normand reported that these were constructed by the Army and upgraded by MassDevelopment with no thoughts of separating them by town.
“They should be kept as a unit. It’s unrealistic to think that they could ever be managed separately by the individual towns,” Normand said.
