Loaves & Fishes will be collecting nickel deposit bottles and cans at the Littleton transfer station during the month of June. The transfer station, located on Spectacle Pond Road (just off of Route 2A), is open from noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. We need people to help by taking a two-hour shift at any time during this period. Saturdays are especially important, since that is when most of the activity occurs. Some lifting (of cases of empty beer bottles) is required, but it’s not hard work.
We typically make about $1,000 during the warm summer months—and that $1,000 can buy 5,500 pounds of food when we “shop” at the Greater Boston Food Bank. It’s not trivial.
We can also use help hauling the filled boxes and bags to the redemption center in Lowell. We are paid by the bag/box—no need to feed empties into machines.
