Here are a few of the many reasons that we do not need an override:
- The voters already voted against an override. If the override had passed we would not have the opportunity to re-vote.
- Even without an override the budget will increase from fiscal year 2007 to fiscal 2009 —from $17,530,620 to $19,743,498. That’s a 12.6 percent increase, or an increase of 6.1 percent per year—approximately three times the core inflation rate.
- It was not long ago that the school system had a combination Bromfield principal and superintendent, with an assistant. We do not need an independent superintendent along with his staff. Eliminating the superintendent’s office would save close to $500,000 per year.
- I pay 100 percent of my health insurance. If public employees paid 50 percent of their health insurance, the town would save approximately $1 million per year.
The list goes on and on. It is obvious that the taxpayers are over-taxed, and that the town carelessly spends the hard-earned dollars of the taxpayers. The School Committee has shown utter disregard for taxpayers, and has demonstrated that it is little more than a rubber stamp for the teachers union and the school superintendent.
The only way to stop this outrageous spending is to stop giving. Until all of the over-spending and waste is purged from the budget, all overrides should be defeated.
