Market Basket: What’s happening at the Harvard Farmers’ Market

September 26, 2008

Market date and time: Saturday, Sept. 27, 9 a.m. to noon

Featured band: Rising Tribe is a band based in Massachusetts that features singer-songwriter Tiffany Gassett and Bolton resident and guitar teacher John Rawlings. The band plays a blend of original and cover music—Celtic folk rock, classic rock, reggae, country, and more. The full band, which is made up of five members, plays at local venues throughout Massachusetts and New England. Last month Rising Tribe serenaded shoppers and vendors as a strolling duo.

Featured vendor: Gilson’s Herb Lyceum will be featuring some gorgeous fall annuals (and some lavender-infused lemonade!).

This week at the market:
Great Dog Rescue New England will be at the market this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon to introduce some of its dogs and pups for adoption and to explain the adoption process. GDNRE is a nonprofit, volunteer-based, all-breed rescue that saves and places needy dogs and puppies from local and southern shelters. More information on the organization is available at www.gdrne.com.

Next week:
Great Dog Rescue New England will have puppies available for adoption at the market on Sept. 27.

For the topping:
1½ cups flour
¾ cup granulated sugar
¾ cup light brown sugar, packed
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup rolled oats (or visit the Thoreau Foods booth for some very special granola)
1 stick cold unsalted butter, diced

Peel, core, and cut pears into large wedges. Combine them with lemon juice and spices, and pour into the dish.

For topping, combine the flour, sugars, salt, oatmeal, and cold butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until the mixture is crumbly and the butter is the size of peas. Spoon evenly over the pears.

Put dish on a sheet pan and bake for one hour until the top is brown and the pears are bubbly. Serve warm.

The Harvard Farmers' Market is open Saturdays, August 23 through October 23, 9 a.m. to noon.
