In support of Sobalvarro

October 30, 2009

I strongly support Marie Sobalvarro’s candidacy for the Board of Selectman.

I’m impressed by her intelligence, her very strong accounting and project management skills, her demonstrated interest in serving all Harvard’s demographic groups, and her high degree of diplomacy.

With the economy a mess, a candidate with a strong grasp of finance is imperative. The recently announced Massachusetts tax revenue shortfall will result in additional cuts to Harvard’s local aid this year, resulting in a tighter town budget than ever. As an MBA and four-year veteran of the Finance Committee with many years of professional experience as a large-scale project manager, Marie has the knowledge and skills to deal with this fiscal crisis.

Especially for those of us who live north of Route 2, now is the time to get involved in our town politics. With finances so tight, the development of the Ayer Road commercial district looms large in the plans of our town boards. The Board of Selectmen has the power to make decisions about the development of Ayer Road, which will have a huge impact on traffic, building density, open space, noise, ground water supply and drainage, utilities, and general quality of life in our neighborhoods.
