Stu Sklar’s “Consider This” article in last week’s Press, “Local income tax could correct inequitable levy burdens,” strikes me as a great idea. Here is a way Harvard can retain the rural character we all love and yet be able to raise sufficient funds to run a good town with first-rate schools and not totally rely on the anti-progressive property tax. I commend Sklar and others who are exploring this option for possibly showing us a way out of the “structural deficit” that has bedeviled the town for some years now. A thorough discussion of the local income tax option at the Town Meeting this spring is the place to start.
