Thomas Kilian, son of Michael Kilian and Valerie Hurley, was recently awarded first prize for his interpretation of Native American art in Cheri Amarna’s sixth-grade Famous Basket Project at the Applewild School in Fitchburg. His basket is on display with other entries from his class at the Fitchburg Art Museum, which has teamed up with the school to feature the work of Amarna’s sixth-grade artists.
As part of the Famous Basket Project, students spent a semester choosing an artist to research and write about, along with creating an original work of art by transforming a basket to reflect the style of that artist.
Staff members from the art museum judged the 40 entries, and all the entries were displayed at the museum for a week in June. The criteria for judging were craftsmanship, transformation of the basket and interpretation.
