Bromfield girls and boys track teams defeated Lunenburg Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Wachusett Regional High School. Lunenburg, which had been victorious over Bromfield for the past two indoor and outdoor seasons, fell to the talented and motivated Trojans.
Leading up to their subsequent win at the State Relays on Sunday, the Bromfield girls defeated the Lunenburg team 52 to 39, completing an undefeated season. Bromfield girls coach Ray Dunn said, “Two years ago we won the Division VI State Championships, but during the season we lost our dual meet to Lunenburg. They have a fine program with excellent runners and great coaching. That makes this victory of the team very special.”
Sophomore Moriah Arnold placed first against her opponents on the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.5 seconds. Onlookers stood in awe as Arnold finished her race while her opponents were still leaping over their last hurdle.
Other first-place victories went to sophomore Alyssa Johnson, who ran a 300-meter with a time of 49.0 seconds, and freshman Alexia Lipman, who ran a 600-meter with a time of 1 minute, 43.6 seconds.
Sophomore Emma Hall ran the 55-meter dash in 8.0 seconds, coming in an impressive second. She began her race several strides behind her Lunenburg opponents, but pushed her limits and caught up to all but one of her opponents.
Other second-place finishes went to senior Sydney Durand, who ran the 1,000-meter with a time of 3 minutes, 20.4 seconds, and junior Alyssa Swindells, who ran the 1-mile with a time of 6 minutes, 10.6 seconds.
Bromfield placed first in the high jump, with sophomores Caroline Turnbull and Vishwa Rasania placing first and second, with heights of 4 feet, 11 inches and 4 feet, 9 inches, respectively.
Bromfield girls placed first and second on the 4×200 and 4×400 relay.
Dunn said, “We will see this team [Lunenburg] again in the League Championships and the District meet, and I hope this win provides motivation for our runners to continue to perform at their best.”
Bromfield boys defeated Lunenburg 57 to 34, and if not for their loss at the dual meet against Murdock, would enjoy an undefeated season. Boys coach David Boisvert said, “We did fairly well in this meet. We had very strong showings in the long distance events.”
The boys placed first in the 55-meter hurdles, 300-meter, 1,000-meter, 1-mile, 2-mile, 4×400 relay, and shot put.
Freshman Paul Malloy, junior Ellis Toll, and eighth-grader Price Day finished in the top three in the 1,000-meter, with times of 2 minutes 59.4 seconds, 3 minutes 6.5 seconds, and 3 minutes 14 seconds, respectively.
Other first-place victories went to sophomore Glenn Steranka, who ran the 55-meter hurdles in 9.0 seconds; sophomore Brendan Beale, who ran the 300-meter in 44.8 seconds; junior Nick Kronauer, who ran the 1-mile in 4 minutes, 51 seconds; and Day, who ran the 2-mile in 10 minutes, 56.9 seconds.
Seniors Miles Jarvis and Deji Oyekunle put the shot a distance of 36 feet, 3 inches, and 35 feet, 8 inches, respectively, placing first and second.
The 4×400 relay team placed first, with a time of 4 minutes, 16 seconds.
Coach Boisvert said, “Although this is the end of our actual season against other teams, we still have Leagues and Districts. The boys are training hard, so we’ll see if their hard work will pay off in the end.”
