Bromfield’s boys and girls ski teams both finished with top-three finishes in giant slalom races at Nashoba Valley Tuesday, with the ladies missing top billing by only two points to place second behind Westford Academy and the guys cleaning up third, trailing Westford and Acton-Boxborough for the second week in a row. After two races, with four to go in their regular season, Bromfield’s girls are now tied with Westford with an 11-1 record, while the boys are holding firmly to third overall with a record of 8-4.
The ladies were once again led across the finish by freshman Sarah Rowse, who won the giant slalom competition for the second straight week. Senior Tory Sowizral took sixth and junior Jackie Sampson grabbed 7th. Once again the Rooney sisters—senior captain Maggie and freshman Lizzie—closed out the points for Bromfield, this week with 14th- and 15th-place results. In her first varsity start for the ladies, freshman Gabrielle Doben crossed the line 31st.
On the junior varsity side, impressive performances from second-year racers Jillian Saydah, a junior, and eighth-grader Emily Erdos resulted in fourth and fifth place; junior Mary Egan was right behind in sixth. Sophomore Jackie Magoun pulled in her best finish to date, finishing ninth in the JV standings.
Bromfield’s top male racers accumulated 437 points on the day, once again trailing A-B by a handful of points, while Westford once again dominated. Junior Erik Johnson led Bromfield’s boys across the line with an eighth-place finish; junior Sam Elkind finished right behind Johnson in ninth. Seventh-grader Brad Sampson proved last week’s results were no fluke, grabbing 88 points for the Trojans with a 13th-place finish. Senior Jon Fobert and eighth-grader Peter Donaldson closed out the points for Bromfield with 19th- and 21st-place finishes; sophomore Ryan Williams bagged 25th in the varsity ranks.
Three athletes cracked the top 10 in the junior varsity standings, with juniors Pat Ware and Austin Parker grabbing fourth and seventh, and freshman Sam Dyer ninth. Seventh-grader Nick Steele, in his first race for Bromfield, placed 26th, and freshman Jack Williams closed out JV for Bromfield with 28th.
The team switches to slalom racing over the next three weeks, before closing out the regular season with one more giant slalom in early February. Several Bromfield athletes are in the hunt for invitations to State Championships: Rowse, Sampson, Sowizral, and the Rooney sisters for the girls; Johnson, Elkind, and Sampson for the boys.
