Former Bromfield theater teacher Michael McGarty is directing a production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie,” which opens Friday in Maynard at Acme Theater. The production features Harvard actors James Turner and Steve Hayward in the respective roles of Tom Wingfield and Jim O’Connor.
Tennessee Williams’ classic drama of the modern theater presents Amanda Wingfield, a remnant of southern gentility, who lives in poverty in a St. Louis apartment. Her son Tom desperately longs to escape his situation, while her daughter Laura lives in a world of tiny glass figurines. Director Mike McGarty presents a unique interpretation of the work, where the character of Tom, normally played by one actor at two ages, is portrayed by two separate actors who simultaneously inhabit the world of the play and treat the memory of the past as an evolving ritual of regret.
