Committee reelects officers
At its Monday evening meeting on May 20, the School Committee reelected SusanMary Redinger as chairwoman, Kirsten Wright as vice-chairwoman, and Bob Sullebarger as secretary. All votes were unanimous.
Repaving Pond Road parking lot may be delayed
Committee member Keith Cheveralls reported that he, Chairwoman SusanMary Redinger, and Superintendent Joe Connelly had met with Director of Public Works Rich Nota about repaving the lower parking lot. The project was approved at the Annual Town Meeting in April.
“It would be nigh impossible to get the work done this summer,” Cheveralls said, in large part because none of the planning and design work can start until funds are released when the new fiscal year begins on July 1, 2013. Since the paving work itself is expected to take 65 days, the earliest it could be completed under these circumstances is November 1, 2013.
Another factor is that many paving companies already have full schedules for this summer. Redinger said, “If you go out to bid now, everyone’s plate is full, and you’ll pay top dollar. But if you go out in February, they have nothing set.”
Cheveralls pointed out that there is a risk that costs for the project will increase by next year. But there is also some chance that, with a year’s notice, the town’s Department of Public Works might be able to do the project itself, which would be less expensive.
