Commission to snowmobilers: Desist or face penalties

January 24, 2014

After hearing that snowmobilers were again clearing and using a trail over wetlands on the Horn conservation land below Dean’s Hill, the Conservation Commission unanimously agreed to warn the Harvard Snowmobile Club that continued intrusion there will result in a fine or withdrawal of permission to use nearby trails, or both. On a site walk with Snowmobile Club representatives in 2012, the Conservation Commission explicitly prohibited creating trails on the wetland property that lies at the foot of Dean’s Hill, located between Still River Road and Depot Road.

Despite this current conflict, the commission told an observer from Groton at a recent meeting that the commission has a good rapport with the local club and few complaints. Every year the club reviews its trails and permission to use them with the commission, puts up trail signs during snow season, and maintains the routes.
