I have lived in Harvard twice in my life and have made many friends in this lively, energetic, and serene town. My wife, children, and I almost moved here full time in 2004, but my commute to work would have been too long.
The first time I lived in town, Harvard was more of a farming community, hanging on to its rural past. When I moved back, that past was slipping away and it was becoming a very affluent and liberal community. One thing that did not change, however, was the coexistence of its diverse people.
I had one friend who had left the Catholic Church years ago and had her own strong opinions about it. But she was very tolerant and accommodating to the church in town and welcomed them in a very friendly way into her business. She did not advertise her opinions or express intolerance in the public forum.
I take exception to Scott Carter’s intolerance of someone else’s opinion in town. I find that this is not the norm with the wonderful people who live here. As the Harvard Press itself states, “Tolerance is a two-way street.”
