A thank-you to those who pioneered Harvard’s first bed race…

September 22, 2016

On Saturday, Sept. 17, the Harvard Lions knew precisely why they loved this town so much. The overwhelming support and charitable generosity from its core of neighbors, businesses, local organizations, friends, and family was incredible, witnessed by the outpouring of people attending our first-ever annual Volksfest event and Bed Race.

As chairman of the Harvard Lions Bed Race, I want to personally thank those bed race team individuals who in my view pioneered what could very well be a major event here in town. They can look back and say, “We raced in that!” We registered nine race teams in our very first year of this event: Troop 1 Harvard; Lions Roar; Flamingos; Fireballs; Secret Swervice; Row, Row, Row Your Bed; Winnie the Pooh & Tigger Too; Zikamobile; and the Bed Pans.

The primary goal of the Harvard Lions Bed Race was simple: Create a FUN community atmosphere that embraces the spirit of lighthearted competitive challenge among organizations, departments, individuals, businesses, neighbors, and friends.

If you were a spectator at the bed race, the Lions say thank you! You can say, “I went to that race!” It was your sheer numbers (hundreds of you) with cheering voices and support that helped push these nine pioneering teams and their race beds to the finish line in the Bromfield School driveway.

Team Flamingos captured first place with a time of 42.07. Team Secret Swervice captured second place with a time of 43.64, and team Fireballs took third with a time of 44.86 and won first place in Best Theme, Costume, and Design. Congratulations. The Lions Club Bed Race first-place trophy will be on display at the Harvard General Store.
