The Bromfield boys soccer team beat the Mount Greylock Regional High School Mounties 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Marlborough to proceed to the state semifinals on Tuesday.
The girls soccer team lost 2-1 in double overtime to the Sutton High School Suzies Saturday in Milbury, following a 90-minute delay due to a fast moving storm that filled the sky with rain, wind, and lightning, sending players and fans scurrying for shelter.
Bromfield’s goals against Mt. Greylock were scored on a penalty kick by Ryan McNulty barely 10 minutes into the game and by Brendan Listzwan on an assist from Tafera Vera toward the end. The third goal against the Mounties was self-inflicted when a ball rebounded off a Mt. Greylock player into their net.
At the girls’ Saturday night’s game against Sutton, Bromfield’s single goal was scored early in the game by senior co-captain Katie Iacomini on an assist by Tallie Dutkewych. Bromfield’s defenders held Sutton scoreless until the final minutes of the second half when a shot by Suzie forward Anna Joseph tied the game.
With moments remaining in the half and lightning approaching from the west, the referees called for a 30 minute delay, which stretched to 45 minutes as the storm thundered past. Following a ten-minute warm-up, play resumed at about 6:25 p.m. with neither team scoring until the final two minutes of the second 10-minute overtime period when Joseph scored for a second time.
For the girls, it’s the end of a stellar season. “It's very hard seeing great things come to an end and especially when you build such strong relationships,” wrote Coach Katie Greene after the game. “The chemistry between these girls on the field has been building over the years and even more so over the postseason and I feel like we hadn't peaked yet, so I am sad to see it end.” The team’s 11 departing seniors “leave some big shoes to fill; they have left quite a mark on Bromfield girls soccer. I am so proud of them.”
The boys soccer team is Bromfield’s remaining hope for a state title this fall. They will play No. 4 Sutton at Assabet Valley Regional High School Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The winner will play either Westport High or Douglas High for the MIAA division 5 championship on Saturday, Nov. 20.
