I want to express my enthusiastic support for Question 3 at the Town Election on May 9. Question 3 will increase the Massachusetts Community Preservation Act (CPA) surcharge from 1.1 to 3%. It will also increase the matching funds from the state; historically, the match has been from 17-100% of local funding. The CPA presents a unique opportunity for our community to increase our commitment to preserve and protect our natural, historic, recreational spaces, and affordable housing resources for generations to come.
The CPA has a proven track record of success in communities across the state of Massachusetts and in Harvard. By increasing the surcharge and the matching funds from the state, Question 3 empowers us to increase our efforts. It will provide us with a funding mechanism to preserve and protect our natural, historic, recreational spaces and affordable housing resources. Most importantly these decisions will be made by us, in town.
A great strength of the CPA is its flexibility. It allows our community to determine the projects that are most relevant and beneficial to us. Whether it’s acquiring land for conservation, restoring a historic building, creating a park or playing field, or creating affordable housing units, the CPA provides the means to address our specific needs. It also encourages collaboration among local government, community organizations, and residents, fostering a sense of community engagement and ownership in our preservation efforts.
I urge everybody to vote “yes” on Question 3 at the ballot on May 9 at the Bromfield School. Polls are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Let’s take this opportunity to make a lasting investment in the future of our community.
