Opinions should not be published as facts

I disagree with Joseph Spinelli’s recent letter regarding the addition of an editor’s note to a submitted letter. Contrary to the writer’s assertion, it is precisely the role of the editor to provide clarification when the opinion expressed by a writer may communicate misinformation. I applaud your willingness to publish controversial letters, and then to provide a clear and unambiguous editor’s note providing factual counterpoint to an opinion.

People cannot decide their own truth. I rely on trustworthy news outlets to ensure that they communicate facts verified through proper sources and methods. Keep up the good work, and don’t be intimidated into treating opinion as facts, or permitting people to bring their own pseudo-facts into a discussion.
