My name is Adam Wool, and I’m running for Harvard’s Select Board.
I grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, however Harvard has always been a second home to me. When I was 5, my mom married Ed Pieters, who had deep roots here, and I quickly became part of the community. I swam and fished in the pond, went sledding on the Common, enjoyed various apple festivals, and even attended the occasional firemen’s muster.
In 1979, my folks moved here full time. Not long after, I headed to Alaska to start my own adventures. There I earned a degree in physics, started and ran several small businesses, and eventually served eight years as a state representative.
Winning elections as a moderate Democrat in a Republican state meant I had to work with everyone—Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike. I chaired committees and helped craft balanced budgets while serving on the finance committee—in a state with no income or sales tax. We had to make tough choices, respect our values, and still get things done. I learned the importance of listening, collaborating, and being practical—skills I believe will serve Harvard well.
Although I’ve only lived back in town full time for three years, I’ve been a property owner here for over 20. Like many, I’ve watched taxes climb while revenue sources remain limited and costs continue to rise. Harvard is growing and changing, but I think we need a clearer, shared vision of where we’re headed. My kids have greatly benefited from the schools in Harvard and I want that to continue for all.
In Alaska, people used to say, “We don’t care how they do things in the lower 48.” I never agreed with that. I believe there’s always something to learn from others, and I hope to bring a fresh perspective and a willingness to look at problems in new ways to Harvard’s Select Board.
Some sayings I do believe in: It’s OK to think outside the box. To make an omelet, you need to break a few eggs. And, if it ain’t broke … don’t fix it.
I’d be honored to bring that approach to serving Harvard.
