The Commission on Disabilities is writing in response to Heidi Gomez’s “Consider this … ” article in the July 11 publication of the Harvard Press. Ms. Gomez brought attention to the challenges faced by individuals with a disability who seek accessibility to many of the activities abled individuals take for granted and the interpretation of “accessibility.” This piece brings to light a crucial issue that deserves broader attention and a call for greater empathy and understanding within our community.
The experiences described are unfortunately not isolated incidents. True inclusivity means recognizing and valuing every individual’s inherent dignity and right to access information and services without prejudice. It requires nondisabled individuals to be mindful of their language, actions, and perspectives. Many disabled individuals frequently navigate environments where their needs are overlooked, their voices are unheard, or their presence is met with discomfort or inappropriate curiosity.
Let us use this article as a catalyst for self-reflection, education, and activism. The Commission on Disabilities applauds Ms. Gomez’s advocacy.
