On Wednesday, Nov. 9, we took down our election sign and put up a “Black Lives Matter” sign in our front yard. We support the BLM movement, as it has been envisioned by its founders to raise awareness of the struggle against the widespread and often unconscious racist ways so many of us, my husband and I included, act in our daily lives. By Friday morning Nov. 11, someone had stolen the sign. We reported it to the police; they were very responsive to us, and we are appreciative of their work.
I know a sign might seem like it has little impact. It doesn’t directly change minds. But a sign can offer comfort and make other like-minded people feel less alone. A sign can connect us to people who want to work together. A sign can make you think and ask questions. For all these reasons we put up our sign—and soon will be putting it up again. If you see me about town, I invite you to discuss this issue with me. I’m not an expert, but I would be open to conversation.
