At last May’s Bromfield graduation, the Woman’s Club of Harvard presented monetary awards totaling $10,000 to six students. We also donated $1,200 to Loaves & Fishes, our adopted charity.
Being a philanthropic organization in a small town like Harvard allows members to become aware of good civic projects, such as a clock at the town beach wanted by mothers of swimmers as well as beach staff; holiday lights for the Christmas tree on the Common (much to Billy Salter’s ire); the painting of the flagpole on the Common; and, lastly, a defibrillator for our Police Department.
Occasionally our club is approached by a sponsor in need of money to facilitate a worthy project. That is what happened last year when Bill Johnson called to say that a Bromfield senior whom he was mentoring wanted to do a project for his Eagle Scout badge. This young man, Peter Donaldson, came to our board, along with Bill, and presented plans for a handicapped parking spot at the town beach that would lead to a paved sidewalk alongside the beach house and allow wheelchair access to the beach and the pond. We gave $2,000 to help complete the project (in conjunction with the Lions Club), which was accomplished last spring on time and on budget, plus some of the money went toward a special wheelchair that can cross the sand and go into the water!
The Woman’s Club of Harvard is an organization of women who fundraise to give back to the town. We are always looking for new members and fresh ideas. We meet on the first Monday of the month at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Parish Hall (formerly St. Theresa’s) from October through April. Our first meeting of the year is Monday, Oct. 5. Come and have lunch with us and see if our friendly ladies and our activities suit you. We’d love to see you.
We are a nonprofit organization. If you wish to make a donation toward scholarships, please make your check out to Harvard Woman’s Philanthropic Club Inc. Our mailing address is P.O. Box 438, Harvard, MA 01451-0438
