When Donald Ludwig was elected to the Select Board on May 17, 2022, voter turnout was 6.27%. While Mr. Ludwig garnered nearly 80% of the measly 281 votes cast, his was the lowest individual total that any elected official who ran for office garnered for any of the several open board or committee seats that year. It took less than 4.9% of all registered voters in the town of Harvard for him to gain a seat on the Select Board where he eventually became chair.
Among the positive outcomes of the egregious spectacle that he has caused, perhaps voters will turn out in greater numbers to take town elections more seriously; perhaps candidates will be vetted more thoroughly and more carefully; and perhaps those who rose to speak out against Ludwig’s behavior will consider volunteering on town boards or committees, or even running to replace Mr. Ludwig on the Select Board.
I thank them all for speaking out against yet another episode of prejudice and bigotry in our town, and am grateful to the Select Board members who acted promptly and correctly to address it.
