Why on earth was chemical de-icer used on the roads this past Saturday? With only a dusting of snow, which dissipated as soon as the sun came up, it was obvious that a ton of the chemical had been used on my stretch of East Bare Hill Road. This is environmentally unacceptable. All of the chemical runs off into a wetland in one of my pastures and I do not want all that pollution. I take great care of my property, never applying any chemicals, insecticides, herbicides, etc., and I am faced with this. The unnecessary cost of applying that stuff plus the fact that I am sure we paid overtime to the employee who was charged with spreading it resulted in a cost that we need not incur.
It seems to me we can come up with a more efficient plan for how to treat our roads when it’s necessary. I would appreciate hearing from the Selectmen as to what they think should be done about this.
