Three referendum questions will appear on the statewide election ballot on Nov. 2. The League of Women Voters recommends a “no” vote on each question.
- Question 1 would repeal the state sales tax on alcoholic beverages. This tax provides funding dedicated to drug and alcohol treatment programs, which would suffer cutbacks or elimination.
- Question 2 would repeal the state’s affordable housing law, which helps provide affordable housing for working families, seniors, and people with disabilities. Because of this law, more than 58,000 affordable homes have been created all across the state. Repeal of this law would immediately halt the creation of housing that is affordable to seniors and working families in communities across the commonwealth.
- Question 3 would reduce the state sales tax on all goods from the present 6.25 percent to 3 percent. This would create a $2.5 billion deficit in the state budget, impacting and cutting state services and local aid, which in turn could cause an increase in local property taxes.
Remember to vote, Nov. 2.
