Very soon after the new library opened in April 2007, Stu Sklar approached me to discuss cooperation between the schools and the library. At that time I was a bit surprised by the large number of students coming to the library after school. As a new library trustee I was open to ideas to deal with this new situation. I appreciated Stu’s willingness to act as an unofficial liaison between the School Committee and the library. Since we opened three years ago Stu has continued to reach out and discuss ideas for cooperation between us next-door neighbors. Stu is the only current School Committee member who understands how much the school depends on the library for classes and other official school activities, as well as the after-school demands on library staff. He also understands that about half of the library’s reference budget is dedicated to school project needs. I support Stu and his efforts to bring together the school and library as well as the rest of the community.
