As the blustery weather marked the final Harvard Farmer’s Market of the season, I overheard one of its dedicated volunteers ask the rhetorical question, “Why am I doing this?” as she chased an overturned trash receptacle leaving a path of unpleasant litter behind.
I wanted to let her and her earth-conscious cohorts know that I am deeply grateful for their collective resourceful energies. It is a pleasure to wake up on a Saturday morning and make my way down to the market—connect with friends, meet new ones, have one of my 7-year-old’s friends greet me with a child’s enthusiasm, pat a dog—not to mention enjoy the fresh bounty that the earth has to offer. I get it. I get the vibe.
