This is a call for accountability in response to letters by Sue Tokay and Steve Peisch and Kate Lucey (Letters to the Editors, February 9), defending former School Committee members Paul Wormer and Sharon McCarthy. Typically, our local newspapers are woefully inadequate at investigative journalism. I would like to applaud Laura Andrews’s efforts, and encourage her to continue investigating in the interest of protecting Harvard taxpayers.
We want to teach our children about personal responsibility, accountability, and the value of a free press…right?
According to the Press report, a state ethics commission investigation is underway. The Attorney General’s office may also have interest in this matter.
Superintendent Jefferson’s denials of personal wrongdoing in this matter are inadequate, and do not offer the kind of leadership necessary to resolve this matter. Jefferson’s subordinate, Charles Horn, is quoted as saying that some special education matters had been handled “outside of regulations,” so taxpayers should expect a detailed explanation very soon. School officials are accountable to the taxpayers who make public education possible. As a community, we need to clear the air in order to go forward with funding and running our schools in a way that is responsible to the taxpayers, and equitable to all students.
