Dave Durrant commented [February 9 Letters to the Editors] on how we can conserve our use of plastic by bringing our own canvas bags for shopping excursions. Manufacturers and packagers need a paradigm shift in thinking about the use of plastics. Presently there is a 6:1 plastic-to-plankton ratio in our ocean gyres where the plastic has photodegraded to the size of plankton and the sea life cannot distinguish between the two, resulting in it either killing the feeders or becoming part of our food chain, thus making endocrine disruption a component of the food we ingest. We need to try to eliminate it from this destructive cycle by not using it in the first place where possible, recycling, and perhaps developing biodegradable substitutes.
