Farmers’ Market helps build a vibrant community

September 4, 2009

There are many goings-on in town that make Harvard a great place, but it’s those like the Farmers’ Market that really help make it a strong community. The market brings together the people of our town and benefits local farmers and businesses.

I remember playing soccer on the fields in the center of town when I was younger, and after the game the team would grab doughnuts as a treat from the Harvard Athletic Association doughnut stand. This ritual only brought together members of the soccer community. The Farmers’ Market brings everyone into the mix (and in a healthier way of course).

Another great aspect of this market is that it helps to preserve the vitality and the importance of our town’s center. It aids the community in maintaining connections between cross-town neighbors in a way that everyone can enjoy. Who doesn’t like chatting with friends as the melodies of local musicians drift through the air in the background?

The name “the Harvard Farmers’ Market” might suggest that this weekly event revolves solely around food. In reality, it is a means of tying our community together, benefiting our school programs, local musicians and farmers, as well as bringing us back to our roots in the center of town.

I would like to send many thanks to the founders of the market. It is great that a couple of mothers chatting over coffee made such a great impact on our community. I hope that it inspires other people to try new things in our town and that we will all support them with the same enthusiasm and encouragement that we have shown to the Farmers’ Market.
