Because we derive most of our food from our own vegetable and fruit gardens as well as from our sheep and chickens, we have taken great care to avoid insecticides, herbicides, and other chemicals on our lawn, pastures, and gardens
Twenty-five or so years ago when the town was participating in the mosquito control program, Pam and I opted out of having our farm sprayed, and posted it as required. It made no difference. I remember lying in bed one night hearing the spray truck come down East Bare Hill Road and the nauseating fog coming right in our window not having had time to get up and close all the windows. We do not want to endure that again.
We will never get rid of mosquitoes and just as well because lots of birds and other animals depend on them for food. This program is costly, ineffective, and in our experience badly managed. We urge our friends and neighbors, and all who are truly concerned about maintaining a healthy environment, to vote NO on Article 39 at the town meeting.
