Regarding the March 21 front page article titled “Town employees shocked by changes to retiree health insurance rules.” I too would be shocked if my employer changed my benefit plan so as to enable me to continue to receive healthcare coverage after only 10 years of service and continue healthcare coverage after retiring at the age of 60. The reason I would be shocked is because I, like the vast majority of private sector workers, am not eligible to continue healthcare coverage at all, even after 100 years of service or after the age of 100. My employer sponsored healthcare costs me $441 per month and includes a $1,000 per year individual deductible. My healthcare plan is considered to be very competitive in the private sector.
I would like to thank the Board of Selectmen for finally trying to address this huge liability. I support town workers, and I am thankful for first responders. State and municipal union members need to understand that their benefits are unsustainable and far more luxurious than what is available to private sector employees.
