Like many families in Harvard, we try to be conscious of where our food comes from. It feels like supporting local businesses and local farms and eating fresh whenever possible is in the fabric of our community. That’s why I was surprised (and delighted) to recently discover that a product we’ve started buying regularly, Little Leaf Farms lettuce, is grown right next door in Devens.
We first came across the company during a feature on Channel 5’s Chronicle. The overhead picture of their facility was stunning. It looked like a green park as far as the eye could see, the size of five football fields. It feels exciting to see something so innovative and impressive happening right here in our backyard.
Little Leaf Farms is growing high-quality, pesticide-free lettuce year-round in high-tech greenhouses. It’s not just good lettuce, it’s delicious, crisp, and lasts longer than anything else we’ve bought. They support local jobs and innovation just a few miles from our homes.
We often think of Devens as the place with the business park, but this is a great reminder that real, forward-thinking agriculture is happening right nearby. I’d encourage fellow Harvard residents to check the label next time you’re in the grocery store. When you see Little Leaf Farms, know you’re supporting a local company doing great things for food and the region.
